The Least of These

{May 9, 2008}   Turning 4

Yesterday Paul turned 4! :) I had a few of his favorite activities planned – the library, swimming at Mamau’s, and of course – some park time. But was a bit derailed and ended up at The Springs Preserve. The kids had a blast! Basically, we went swimming at Mamau’s for two hours, and the rest of our nine hour day was at the Preserve. Whoa!

This place is awesome! Plus, there’s a knitting group that meets every other Thursday – so now I’m doubly in love with the place. ;)

The kids used to have an annual pass to The Children’s Lied Science Muesem here in Vegas, and they always had a fantastic time (not always me though – two kids in a place like that….) but here at the Preserve was just awesome! They had a Farmer’s market, so when we got hungry we were able to have fresh strawberries and fresh Lemon Zingers (awesome awesome) which the kids gobbled up. We were active ALL DAY and no one was fussy or ill behaved (there were of course moments when I would encourage them to try a different muesem that had some tantrums..).

Anya was super excited because of all the water. There’s a gallery called, “Sustanabilty Gallery” which she ♥ LoVeD ♥ . They had a game that asked the question, “How far does your food travel to you?” where she could put oranges into this bin and roll them to the top. There was also an engery efficent home that she could walk through (she wasn’t caring so much about being green, but rather about playing house).

My favorite was a Flash Flood Demonastration. There was a platform and a movie and then a flash flood. I am such an easily pleased nerd, but we came back to that demo about three times. Paul was really into it, but Anya got scared after the second time. Steve pretended to get washed away by the flood, and Paul decided to follow suit and pretend as well. It was adorable.

The had a wonderful playground where Paul got to explore caves, pretend to be the Sandman in a gianormous sand box, and a very cool train. There were climbing skeltons – but Paul was too nervous to try those. I’m sure in about a month or two, he’ll be at the top every time.

Anya insisted on wearing her pink princess shoes – which I allowed since I didn’t think she’d be wearing shoes much at all that day. Of course, we hadn’t planned on the Springs Preserve. ;) So her little feet got sore and I had to buy her socks (the $20 Soul Mate socks were a cheap price compared to gas for our car to go back home and then back to the Preserve).

I’m not sure what’s with the mismatched socks lately – is this a new trend? I love it and cannot wait to cast on for my on pair of mismatched socks. Poor Steve – he freaks when he sees people wearing mismatched socks.

We didn’t get home until almost 9 pm – by which both kids were totally knocked out. However, Paul woke up when we got home and stayed up for almost another two hours. It was maddening! How could a kid be so active all day long and then not be sleepy? Of course, with our kids – wearing them out mentally and physically like this, doesn’t always ensure their sleeping in the following morning. Anya was up by 6:30 :O and Paul was up at like 5:00 am or something crazy like that. However, Paul wanted to stay in bed, and sleep more. He was just having a hard time. Which is totally unlike him.

Today we’re celebrating their birthday’s at Chuck-E-Cheese and then they’re heading out to the grandparent’s for the weekend! Yay! I cannot wait to just bum around the house, knit, or whatever for a little while.

{May 7, 2008}   Little Miss Match

About 2 weeks ago, DH, the kids, and I went and had a day at the Strip. It was a blast! One of our last stops was FAO Schwartz. While the kids were dancing around on the giant piano BIG style, I noticed the cutest little socks off to the side.

They were Little Miss Match socks. And they were too cute! They were sold in three’s instead of pairs – so that one would have to purposly have to miss match your socks. DH shuddered at the very thought. He’s been worried about miss matched socks since he was our kids’ ages (I was shocked when the MIL told me about it too). I’ve seen how some knitters will purposly miss match the stripes so they don’t exactly match:

But nothing like Miss Match Socks – where they are totally and completely different from one another. Wow! Now those bad boys pop!

I’m almost done with Anya’s Ribbed Cake Icing Socks, yay! I’m creating Purple Licorice socks for my Mamau for Mother’s Day. Then, I’m going to work on making some yummy purposly mismatched stripe socks. I cannot wait! I think I am officially addicted to sock knitting now.

Meanwhile, this months Loom Alongs (LAL) are a daisy dishcloth (good thing I still had one skein of green cotton) and a shrug. I’ve cast onto almost every loom I own trying to make Anya’s pink cotton waves shrug and am about ready to start throwing yarn. :( This will be my first garment like this, so I really want to take advantage of the LAL group with teachers, yet am incredibly frustrated that I cannot get a proper look on any of my looms. I’ve got on more method to try using my Authentic Knitting Board and if that doesn’t work, I’m going to have to make panels using my FG sock looms. Not looking forward to it, since the last time I made something that I had to sew close didn’t turn out so well (thank fully was covered by fun fur so no one noticed except me).

The kids’ party is Friday and then they’re going to Grandma’s for a night and a day – I am SO excited. I am sure they are too as they love Grandma’s house, “Rules? What are those?”. And I am elated because it will be the first time in a long time that I will be able to sleep in on a Saturday without being sick. Since I work Saturdays (5 AM – 2 pm) I haven’t gotten a chance to sleep past 4:30 at the latest in awhile. And I’m up by 6 am on weekdays – you’d think with the 4 am mornings, I’d appreciate sleeping till six, but nah. Not me. :P

I’m also taking an interest in ribbon knitting as it seems this is what tank tops are knit with. I think after I get the stripe socks out of my system, I’ll look into knitting a tank top.

Finally, I’m working up a few patterns to submit to the Markman Farm Knitting Contests. I’ll post more about this soon – but PLEASE go over and vote for me anytime after May 15th. I am dying to try out these boards but they are so pricey – so I’m hoping to win them with a few patterns I’ve improvised and one I’m working on all on my own. We’ll see how it goes.

I’d like to end with a quote I find on Rav -

“I knit so I don’t kill people.”

Just Like Heaven

*ETA: Just so ya’ll know, none of these socks featured here are MY socks that I’ve made, but yummy finished projects I saw on Rav. Carry on. *
